  • Dickinson's poetry is known for being rich in metaphor. Talk about the role of metaphor in this poem. What metaphors are you seeing?

  • Dickinson's poetry is much more inward, discussing private issues (why wouldn't conform). Consider that in regards to gender. (Choices)
  • Whitman's overtly political poetry versus Dickinson's more personal poetry

  • Dickinson didn't want it read aloud...

  •  Soul could be symbol for the heart...or for a friend or lover

  • Ample time could=time to move on?

  • Emperor could be someone who is proposing to her

  • 1862

  • Defiant against societal norms

  • society she is selecting is one where women are equal?

  • Obtrude

  •  Line 7- trying to spark her interest or woo her

    Filtering the real you
Like doll house in regards to private and public performance
A women would have to choose between one or the other were a man during the time period can have both
My decision its over after that, wants to be valued (second stanza)

Line 9- had ample time and now I’m going to move one
Very possible for this poem to be about and “idea” or “decision rather than just be about a “lover” or a “friend”.
Whether it be a “person” or “an idea” it can choose whatever it wants but getting to soul to allow change is what’s difficult
Line 6- interpretation of line, women are lower than men(status) and lower gate could mean does not come from money
Acknowledge and accept women’s decisions, a woman’s choice need to be validated. This poem is about decision or agency
It’s a white man’s world so what do we do? Are actions just a way to just people up?
See the world indifferent
Theme- go away
