Bibliography

A theme we seem to be coming back to is whether individuality is "sincere," or part of a larger motive for a character. We have seen this inHarrison BergeronYoung Goodman Brown, and A Good Man Is Hard To Find (others?). Pick at least one of these stories, but perhaps more, and write about how individuality, or conformity, or both, is used to affect one of the themes which we have covered in the course so far.

  1. We have discussed point of view a lot so far this semester. An aspect of close reading for point of view we seem to continually emphasize in our discussions is who can be "blamed" in a story (Sonny's Blues, A & P, Araby, A Good Man Is Hard To Find) based on the point of view, or lack thereof, of a character. Write a paper where you engage with how point of view influences "blame" in our close reading of one, if not more, of the stories in the course so far. This could be related to gender, place, or person (or?).
  2.  How is what an author is trying to convey in a story affected by point of view? In other words, how does who the author decides to focus point of view on affect how you perceive the story. Some stories you might want to discuss include A Good Man Is Hard To Find, A & P, Araby, Cask of Amontillado, and The Lottery. Write a paper where you engage with how point of view affect what an author is trying to convey in one, or more, of the stories in the course so far.
