The Short Story

For your short story paper assignment you will submit a typed, titled, page numbered, double-spaced essay answering a student created and answered hypothesis by the due date. If you are having trouble with your topic, please see me after class or send me an email. Please include a works cited page including all sources, both primary and secondary, you cite from in MLA format. There is no need to include a cover page.

If your paper involves more than one short story, you must cover them both substantially in your paper. Significant points will be taken off for failing to follow this directive.

The stories we have read so far include...

  • A & P
  • The Yellow Wallpaper
  • Young Goodman Browne
  • The Garden Of Forking Paths
  • Araby
  • The Gospel According To Mark

The paper will have an introductory paragraph with a thesis, body of essay, and conclusion. This should be 1,000-1,250 words NOT including the works cited. Please try not to go over 1,500 words. Your paper will be written according to MLA 7 documentation. Please include your works cited page in the same document, partitioned from the conclusion of your paper with a page break.

For this paper, I am requiring at least two secondary sources. One of these sources need to be directly related to the story or stories you are close reading. All papers must have at least three quotes from the primary source and at least two from secondary sources. Your discussions of these quotes must exceed the quote in length.

The final draft of this paper will be due at 11:59pm on Sunday October 12th to my email (wwend@bcc.edu). Please begin a new email when sending your document.

Please title your final draft file: f14_eng102102_yourlastnamelowercase_paper1
